June Meeting Reminder

The Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild's June meeting will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  As usual, the meeting will be held at the Pittsburgh Project (2801 North Charles Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15214).

The meeting will be a "Show and Sew" meeting.  Bring a project to work on and bring your finished projects and WIPs to show off!  It's a great time to finish up your Mod Mood quilt or make some progress on your other projects.

In addition to the free sewing time, we have some exciting new business to discuss at the meeting (Guild members have already seen some e-mail correspondence on the topic).

May Meeting Summary

The Pittsburgh Modern Quilt guild had an exciting May meeting!  We worked on our Mod Mood quilts - you can see some progress on our Flickr group.  Everyone's quilts are headed in such different directions and they are all looking spectacular!

In new business, meeting attendees agreed that the guild would join the international Modern Quilt Guild.  To facilitate this relationship, dues will be raised to $35/year starting in July.  If you would like more information and details regarding the benefits of the Pittsburgh MQG joining the international MQG, please take a look at Lauren's presentation.

On the subject of dues, don't forget that our fiscal year is up in July and members should renew then at the new rate of $35/year.

Attendees at the May meeting also discussed some potential fundraising ideas to help offset the costs associated with formally joining the MQG.  Ideas included a members' show and sale, raffle quilt made by all guild members, and hosting another raffle basket at an upcoming meeting.  If you have any other fundraising ideas or would like to organize a fundraiser, please let us know!

The June meeting will be a "Sew and Show" meeting.  If any member would like to volunteer a demo for the June meeting, please contact the Pittsburgh MQG.   The meeting will be June 2 from 1-4 at the Pittsburgh Project.  We look forward to seeing you there!  Bring a project to work on and have fun sewcializing!

Quilting In Space

Later today I will be posting a summary of our May meeting (a little belated) with some exciting news.  In the meantime, my inner nerd has an interesting read to share with you - this morning I came across a story about what may be the first quilting in space!

Astronaut Karen Nyberg will be headed to the International Space Station later this month and will be taking fat quarters, a needle, and thread with her.  The NBC News article discusses the limitations of taking such supplies to space and the possibility of some creative re-use of fabric while she is on board the ISS.  Sounds like it might also be the first modern quilting in space!
