May Meeting Reminder

TaMara's Mod Mood (in progress)
Just a friendly reminder that our May meeting is coming up this Sunday, May 5, 2013.  We will be meeting at the Pittsburgh Project (2801 North Charles Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15214) from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

We will be working on our Mod Mood quilts - including arranging and assembling all those gorgeous curves!  If you aren't feeling moody, feel free to bring other projects to work on.

Speaking of other projects, don't forget to bring along any WIPs or finished projects for advice or just to show off!  We'd especially love to see any of the To Boston With Love or Quilts for Boston projects you're working on.

See you on Sunday and best of luck to everyone running the marathon!

To Boston With Love and Quilts For Boston

In the last week or so, quilters have been coming up with some great ways to help those affected by the Boston Marathon bombing.  Two collaborative projects are discussed below - if you hear of anything else, let us know and we'd be happy to share it on the blog, too.

The Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild is hosting To Boston With Love.  They are collecting flags for love- and peace-themed buntings to be displayed in Boston, hopefully in June 2013.

Requirements, examples, and further details are available on their website.  Flags must be received by May 31, 2013.

Quilts for Boston is being coordinated by the Boston Modern Quilt Guild.  They are requesting blue and yellow blocks that are 12.5" tall by any width.  They are also looking for fabric donations for binding, sashing, and backing fabric.  Blocks are due by May 24, 2013.  Details can be found at their website.

If you are planning to participate in either of these projects, leave a comment on this blog post - especially if you'd like to coordinate collecting and mailing blocks from PghMQG members!

The Modern Quilt Guild Showcase

If you haven't heard yet, the International Quilt Festival will be featuring a special exhibit: The Modern Quilt Guild Showcase.  Today is the last day to submit your quilt for consideration - we'd love to see some PghMQG member quilts featured!!  Click here for more details.

PS - If you've been working on your Mod Mood quilt, be sure to post your progress in the Flickr group!  There are some really awesome quilts shaping up :)

Pittsburgh MQG April 2013 Recap

Gina's WIP
The Pittsburgh MQG was happy to welcome two visitors, Barb, and Gerri’s guest, Karen, to the meeting!  The April meeting of the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild was all about letting go of the formality of quilting and sewing a “Modern Mood” quilt!
The Modern Mood quilt concept originated with Sherri Lynn Wood of  More information about the Modern Mood Quilt Along can be found at here.  Members of the PMQG decided that the April meeting would be devoted to making their own versions of the Modern Mood Quilt.

Jodi, guild president, provided an overview of the quilting process and shared both the quilt that she was making, as well as Gina’s Modern Mood Quilt.  Guild members then took to their sewing machines and went with their own particular “mood” to choose colors, slice wedges and sew up some Modern Mood quilt sections.  The majority of the meeting was spent sewing and, of course, talking about everything “quilty”.  The resulting quilt sections were colorful and unique! You can see the work completed here, the guild's Flickr page.

At the end of the meeting, there was time for “Show and Tell”.  Guild members and visitors shared both their Modern Mood quilt sections and other completed quilting projects.

Jodi encouraged Guild members to continue to work on their Modern Mood quilts at home.  At the May meeting, the program will focus on completing the mod mood quilt design, piecing the curves section, and completing the Modern Mood Quilt. (Those unable to attend the April meeting are encouraged to work on their own mod mood quilt and bring it to the May meeting. Join in on the fun!)

The next meeting of the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild is scheduled for Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 1-4pm.

(Many thanks to Kathy for writing up the above recap. She's swell!)

PGH MQG has an Award Winner at the Three Rivers Festival

Melissa stylishly posed with her quilt, City of Bridges.
Congratulations to Melissa, who won second place in the Small Wall Hanging category for her City of Bridges quilt at the Three Rivers Quilt Show in March. As many of you know Melissa made this quilt for the Modern Quilt Guild's Madrona Road Challenge earlier this year.

Melissa and Charming Stars
Melissa was fortunate to have another one of her quilts selected for the show. Pictured above is her Charming Stars quilt.

If any other members of the PGH MQG had quilts in the show please let us know and send us photos to feature on the blog.

Post-workshop silliness before venturing out into the cold....brrr!
Melissa also joined Gina and me on the Friday of the Three Rivers show to teach a workshop on making blocks using modernized triangles. The three of us had a wonderful time demonstrating several ways modern triangles can be used in blocks. The group asked a lot of great questions, and we talked about the awesomeness of modern quilting and the PGH MQG. Our audience seemed very interested in this modern interpretation on a classic pattern used in quilting. They were also incredible kind and enthusiastic.

We really appreciate the Three Rivers Quilt Guild for allowing us to have a presence at the quilt show and hope to continue developing our relationship with them.

See ya'll Sunday!

April Meeting is This Sunday: Let's Get Our Mod Mood On!

Gina's Mod Mood WIP
Greetings modern quilters!
This Sunday, April 7, the Pittsburgh Modern Quilt Guild will embark on its first-ever sew-a-long. Thanks to a suggestion by one of our members the group will be making indivudal modern mood quilts. This quilt was originally conceived by quilter and fiber artist, Sherri Lynn Wood, who hosted an online quilt-a-long in 2010. You can see some of the mod mood quilts from the original quilt-a-long on the Flickr page.

Getting Started

Local guild members were asked to spend the month of March compiling the fabrics for the quilt based on their moods. They were to use the color guide suggested by Sherri on her website, Dainty Time. We will begin the April meeting with a brief piecing demonstration to get everyone started. We will also have a few examples of mod mood WIPs to help participants to visualize the process.

Piecing the Mod Mood Wedges

Our April meeting is a "sew & show"
Sew: Members and guests are encouraged to bring along their sewing machine and current WIPs to work on during our meeting time. For those not interested in making the mod mood quilt, please feel free to bring along a project you are currently working on and sew with us.

Show: Members and guests are encouraged to bring any recently completed modern quilt projects or WIPs to share with the group. It's an opportunity to celebrate our creative successes and/or ask for advice and guidance.

In May we will continue with a demonstration on piecing curves, which is key component to piecing the quilt together.

The meeting details are the same:
